Trust in the Living God

Trust in the Living God

This saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance. For to this end, we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have set our trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. 1 Timothy 4:9-10 WEB

With these words, the apostle Paul instructs Timothy to strive toward the end goal of godliness. In previous verses, Paul describes how some will leave the faith and follow deceiving spirits. Paul warns that men who lack conscience will forbid marriage and order that people abstain from certain foods. He shares that everything God created is good. Paul also writes that prayer and the word of God consecrates our food and the institution of marriage.

In addition, Paul encourages Timothy that he is a good minister of Christ if he shares this information with the faithful. Beyond that, Timothy receives instruction to avoid superstition and false doctrine. Indicating that physical training is of some value, Paul encourages spiritual development which aids a person now and prepares the faithful for eternal life as well.

Reformed Sinners in Christ

As reformed sinners in Christ, like Paul and Timothy we accept the value of godliness and spiritual training. Saved by grace through the blood of Jesus, we too set our trust in the living God. Like these church leaders, if we intend to share our faith, our focus is then on knowing and defending the truth of the gospel message.

Paul’s use of the words, “Savior of all men” refers to salvation for both Jews and Gentiles who trust in the living God and repent from sin. The words “especially those who believe” means “in particular” or “specifically those who believe.” The King James version uses the word “specially” meaning “individually,” indicating the personal aspect of salvation.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for revealing yourself through your holy word. Give me wisdom. Help me to better understand and live in truth. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
