Christian Genesis "Commandments" Devotionals

What are the commandments of God? They are the law of God given to Israel by God through his prophet Moses. These laws give the structure for right thinking and action in accordance with God’s will. Additionally, Christ gave commandments. With the authority of God, Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. WEB”

The apostle Paul describes the purpose of God’s commandments in Galatians 3:24 writing, “The law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. NKJV” Before the life and ministry of Christ, the commandments gave instruction for how to live without offense to God and our fellow man.

The bible teaches in Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. WEB” Each of us sins and falls short of perfectly following the law and will of God. For the purpose of our salvation, our heavenly Father sent his Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, to fulfill the law by living without sin. It is this through Jesus’ atonement sacrifice for our sins that God made a way for repentant sinners to come to him in faith.

Following the commandments of God demonstrates love and submission to the word and will of God. As Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments. WEB” Obeying the laws of our nation and community keeps us in right standing in human society. Likewise, obeying the commandments of God demonstrates good citizenship in the kingdom of heaven.

Scripture: James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. NIV”
