God’s Chosen Ones

God’s Chosen Ones

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; Colossians 3:12 WEB

In this scripture, Paul mentions the faithful as God’s chosen ones. Originally, God chose the nation of Israel as his people. But now, those who believe the gospel message of Christ and repent from sin become adopted as sons and daughters into God’s family.

Jesus says in Matthew 22:14, “For many are called, but few are chosen. KJV” But, what’s the difference between being called and being chosen? The Lord creates a divine plan for everyone. He calls us to fulfill that plan for our lives. A calling is an invitation to live the life God intended for our existence.

The chosen are those who accept the invitation to serve God. When Paul refers to his readers as “God’s chosen ones,” he is writing to those who responded to the calling by choosing to serve God and fulfill their divine destiny.

Five Traits of the Faithful

Describing the faithful as “holy,” Paul addresses those set apart from the world through forgiveness and repentance from sin. The word “beloved” refers to the love God demonstrates in salvation for those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Paul then lists five traits to display as God’s chosen people. First, he mentions a heart of compassion which demonstrates concern for others rather than selfishness. Next, Paul encourages kindness. More than gentleness of spirit, this includes acts of personal sacrifice made for the benefit of others.

Also, Paul promotes lowliness and humility which demonstrate gentleness and submission to the higher power of God. And finally, the apostle mentions perseverance which indicates patience and a willingness to endure difficulty while striving for the kingdom of heaven as God’s chosen ones.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your holy word.  I want to see you. I want to serve you. Help me to fulfill your purpose for my life. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
