Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica holds a special place in canonical scripture. Many scholars agree that it is the first letter of instruction and encouragement Paul writes to a Christian congregation. In it, Paul sets the principles for living a Godly life of service in Christ. Additionally, he reminds readers of the hope we have in our eternal reward through faith in Jesus.
The greeting given to begin the letter comes from Paul, Timothy, and Silas. Each played a vital role in the conversion of the believers in the Thessalonian church. Though accomplished in starting the Christian movement in Thessalonica, each of these men desired that the church continue and flourish in sincerity.
Paul worried for the well-being of the new believers, fearing a tempter might intervene and lead them astray. Like a parent concerned for a child, Paul writes to the church, sharing his delight in receiving word from Timothy that they stood strong in faith and love. Under persecution and in distress, Paul rejoices and reveals the encouragement he feels in knowing of their faithfulness while suffering persecution themselves.
The Truth of the Gospel
Paul wants the church to know that he cares for them. Understanding that salvation is held in the truth of the gospel message of Jesus Christ, Paul is pleased to know that the church is growing in understanding and love while holding fast to sound doctrine.
His concerns relieved through Timothy’s assurance, Paul wrote this prayerful blessing, “May the Lord make you to increase and abound in love toward one another, and toward all men, even as we also do toward you.”
Paul’s prayer reveals his desire for the church to increase in number, bringing more followers into the faith. Also, he wanted the church to abound in love. In other words, Paul wanted the members to overflow with acts of love, genuinely demonstrating care and concern for one another.
This is a glowing example of believers lifting one another up during difficult times. In spite of great struggle and trials, the church encouraged Paul with its faithfulness and Paul encouraged the church with his leadership, love, and perseverance. In God’s grace, through blessings, prayer, and unfailing love, the body of Christ thrives with the mutual support of its various members.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for loving me. Thank you for the encouragement found in your holy word. Help me to abound in love. Guide me to share your word with the world. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
