Shall We Continue in Sin?

Shall We Continue in Sin?

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? Romans 6:1 KJV

The grace of God is greater than the sins of mankind. Realizing this, some may wonder, “Shall we continue in sin?” If God is so forgiving and his grace all encompassing, then why do we bother to change our ways? Whenever the gospel is taught completely, this question arises. It is well answered by Paul who says in Romans 6:2, “May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer?

Some critics of the Christian faith use the grace of God and forgiveness of sin as a charge against the church. These critics argue that the gospel message of forgiveness is really a license to continue living sinful lives. Surely, some who think of themselves as followers of Christ actually believe this. At least, behavior seems to suggest that many do not change sinful lifestyles but only attend church for the feeling of security and fellowship it provides.

Sin No More

The gospel teaches more than forgiveness. The word of God calls sinners to repentance and obedience to the righteous teaching of the Lord. When Christ forgave sins, he followed with a command. Forgiving the woman caught in adultery, Jesus said in John 8:11, “Go, and sin no more. KJV”

Paul taught the same message. Asking, “Shall we continue in sin,” the apostle raises a question that still challenges the Christian faith today. He follows with great understanding. No, we do not continue in sin. From the teaching of John the Baptist who called for repentance, to the words of Christ which forbid sin, through the teaching of Paul, and on until today, the word of God requires our obedience and avoidance of willful sin.

Live in Obedience to God

It is possible to believe we serve God and are saved and yet still be lost. Each of us should ask ourselves, “Should we continue in sin?” Jesus teaches in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. WEB” Knowing this, we have no other course to take but to live in obedience to the word and will of God.

Let us not deceive ourselves. Christ teaches that some who believe they served the church are lost in the end. The Lord says in Matthew 7:22-23, “Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.’ WEB” Clearly, we should not continue in sin.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for my salvation in Jesus Christ. Thank you for your grace and mercy. Guide my steps with your word and your will. Help me to live according to your great purpose, to serve you and your kingdom. In Jesus name – Amen”
