Righteousness

Righteousness

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6 WEB

Some seek righteousness for themselves. That is to say that some people seek to be pleasing to God. For a Christian this means salvation from sin and living a life of service to the Lord. Others seek righteousness for the world. In other words, they desire for justice. In this, they for good to overcome evil and for God to establish his kingdom here on earth. For those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, Jesus promises each of these.

What is a blessing? One way of looking at it is having something of value. God blesses us by making us righteous by his grace through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. We have salvation and the promise of living in the kingdom of heaven. Sin and death pass away and in heaven, our appetite for complete righteousness is fulfilled.

A New Creation

We read in 2 Corinthians 1:2, “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new. WEB” This relates to the blessing of those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. We receive the blessing of forgiveness and new life.

The beatitudes from which the passage we consider comes, are wonderful promises of the blessings God gives to those who seek him believing in Christ. Matthew 5:3-10 records these blessings as Jesus gave them in the sermon on the mount.

Prayer: “Father God, I hunger and thirst for righteousness. Bless me Father and lead me to live a life that pleases you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
