The Lord Knows

The Lord Knows

Nevertheless, the foundation of God stands sure, having this seal, The Lord knows them that are his. And, let everyone that names the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19 KJV

Many false teachers had arisen by the time that Paul wrote this letter. And so, Paul was encouraging Timothy to share the lessons he had learned with reliable people, making them qualified to teach the truth of the gospel. He instructed Timothy to stay out of civilian affairs likening him to a soldier who should only concern himself with pleasing his commanding officer.

The Truth of Salvation

Local authorities chained Paul as a prisoner, but the gospel was set free in the hearts of true believers. Although early Christians encountered persecution for teaching about salvation through Christ, they continued to spread the word with enthusiasm, sharing the truth about salvation through the grace of God in the sacrifice made by Jesus Christ.

Even though there was strong opposition and false doctrine being taught by some, Paul asserts in this scripture that the foundation of the faith stood strong. This is undoubtedly true because the church is founded upon the revelation of the truth concerning the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Also, Jesus as the Messiah has at its foundation the prophecies of the Old Testament.

The Lord Knows His Followers

In Paul’s time, Christ’s undying love and God’s eternal grace won many followers to the faith. Paul shares with Timothy that the Lord knows his followers. He was likely warning him that true believers should separate from false teachers in order to avoid the trouble that would inevitably fall upon them.

Jesus said in John 10:27, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. KJV” True followers of Christ can discern sincere teaching from false teaching. The Lord knows them and sincere believers know his voice. It is important to know the word of God. Our faith is rooted in the Old Testament and brought to maturity in the New Testament of the bible. Study the word and put it into practice in your life, being careful not to deceive yourself or to allow others to deceive you.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your holy word. Give me wisdom and understanding. Reveal your nature and will as I study the word and seek you in prayer. Correct me when I’m off course and give me your grace to forgive those who have offended me. In Jesus’ name – Amen.”
