Worthy of Respect

Worthy of Respect

In the same way, deacons are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. 1 Timothy 3:8 NIV

Too often, the church suffers in its ability to spread the truth of the gospel because of the reputations of those who serve the church. For this reason, Paul gives Timothy direct advice concerning the qualities of overseers and deacons

In this scripture from Paul’s first letter to Timothy, the apostle instructs his young associate in the qualifications of church deacons. In the Christian church, a deacon is an individual who serves the congregation at a level lower than the official minister of the church. Besides playing a minor role in church functions, a deacon interacts with the congregation, helping to spread the truth of the gospel message of Jesus Christ through a life of service.

First, Paul writes that a proper deacon is worthy of respect and sincere. A deacon is a man of good reputation that conducts himself according to the teaching of Jesus Christ. He shows the sincerity of his conversion by displaying the fruits of the Holy Spirit and Obedience to the word of God. He is patient, kind, and self-controlled. A good deacon is willing to sacrifice time and personal interests in the loving service of others.

In the Service of God

Next, Paul mentions sobriety as an essential characteristic to hold this church office. A properly selected deacon demonstrates a clear mind and conscience. Saved by the grace of God, his passion is properly placed in the service of God without worldly interference. As Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5:6, “so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober. WEB”

Finally, a deacon must serve as a good steward of the church’s money. Often handling the secular affairs of the church, a deacon must avoid misusing church funds. Rather than using money to serve their own interests or the interests of favored friends, a faithful deacon, worthy of respect, ensures that church finances promote the spreading of the good news of Jesus Christ while providing assistance for church members in need.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the clarity of your word. Thank you for those who serve your purpose faithfully. Make me a good example to others and worthy of respect. Guide me through a life of service that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
