When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you. Isaiah 43:2 WEB
The prophet Isaiah penned the words to the nation of Israel to comfort and asure God’s people. They are a reminder of God’s promise to his people to protect them and provide for their needs. The prophet reminds Israel that God called them by name and that they are his chosen people.
When we put our faith in Christ, God grafts us to the vine of his chosen people and adopts us into his holy family. We read in Romans 11:19, “Branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. WEB” Further, we read of God in Ephesians 1:5, “having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire. WEB”
As adopted members in the family of God, the promises recorded in Isaiah apply to us as well. Notice the words used in this passage. The prophet wirtes, “when you walk through fire” and not if you walk through fire. Trouble will come in each of our lives but God promises to be there with us helping us through our trials.
I Am With You Always
After describing difficulties his disciples will encounter, Jesus says in John 16:33, “I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble; but cheer up! I have overcome the world. WEB” We will walk through the fire of trials and tribulations but the Lord reassures us in Matthew 28:20, “Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. WEB”
In times when we feel we are drowning in debt and can barely keep our heads above water, the Lord is there with us to pull us through. When troubles come and we feel as though we’re going through hell itself, the Lord is faithful to keep us from harm. Like when King Nebuchadnezzar had Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego thrown into the fire in the book of Daniel, we will walk through the fire unharmed.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the comfort and encouragement of your holy word. Because of you, when I walk through the fires of life, I know you are with me. I am safe because of your love and grace. Help me to live my life in a way that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
