I Will Raise Him Up

I Will Raise Him Up

This is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:40 WEB

When tempted by Satan to turn stones to bread, Jesus replied to his adversary in Matthew 4:4, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. WEB” This is crucial information because we live eternally by the Word of God which is Jeus Christ.

Considering the word of God, we know from John 1:14, “The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. WEB” Of course, John is writing about Jesus Christ who is the Word of God.

The fortieth verse of chapter six in the gospel of John in which Christ reveals of the faithful individual, “I will raise him up,” Jesus described himself as the “bread of life.” Christ declared in John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will not be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. WEB” In this section, Jesus repeatedly reveals the will of our heavenly Father to give eternal life to those who believe in Christ.

Jesus Is the Messiah

Jesus is unmistakably teaching that he is the Messiah as he asserts that he is the Son of God. Further, Jesus states that he descended to the earth from heaven. We read in John 6:38, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. WEB”

The Lord follows with this statement from John 6:39, “This is the will of my Father who sent me, that of all he has given to me I should lose nothing, but should raise him up at the last day. WEB” Repeating the idea “I will raise him up,” Jesus teaches resurrection from the dead.

Resurrection was and is a controversial topic. The Sadducees of Jesus’ time did not believe in resurrection but the Pharisees did. Jesus put the doubt of resurrection to rest for his followers that experienced his miraculous reappearance after his crucifixion. As believers in Christ, we receive the bread of life and live by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. We live in confidence knowing that our resurrected Savior promised each of us, “I will raise him up.”

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the promise of eternal life. Thank you for my salvation in Jesus Christ. Give me wisdom to understand your will. Give me strength to do the things that please you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
