Therefore you now have sorrow, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. John 16:22 WEB
In chapter sixteen of the gospel of John, Jesus prepares his disciples for his crucifixion and resurrection. In addition, the Lord readies his followers for persecution at the hands of those who disbelieve in Christ and his message of love and forgiveness. Jesus reassured his faithful that the sorrow awaiting them was for their good, reassuring them that upon his return, “your heart will rejoice.”
Of course, Jesus went to the cross to pay the price for our sins. His resurrection after revealing his purpose cemented the faith of his followers and fulfilled the Lord’s promise to his faithful saying, “your heart will rejoice.” After experiencing the resurrected Christ, Jesus’ disciples knew without doubt the truth that they once accepted by faith alone. With this, they continued in the joy of Jesus’ promise of eternal life in heaven for his faithful.
Our Suffering Is Temporary
Jesus explained the temporary suffering of the faithful by comparing it to a woman about to give birth. The intensity of the pain and suffering in childbirth is undeniable. However, it is well worth the new life that comes after the birth. The joy that follows overcomes the temporary agony of the mother’s labor.
Upon hearing of Christ’s imminent departure, the disciples began to grieve. Their sorrow intensified as the Lord hung on the cross and died. But, just as Christ promised saying, “your heart will rejoice,“ when Jesus returned having defeated sin and death, they received eternal joy in their hearts.
The comfort Christ offered his followers in that time is ours today. When we put our faith in Jesus, he sends the Holy Spirit to support us in our faith. As we read in John 16:7, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. WEB” Because Christ lives, our hearts rejoice as we receive the very Spirit of God.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for forgiving my sins. Thank you for your Holy Spirit. Guide me to do your will. Help me to share the joy in my heart by spreading the truth of your word. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
