If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. Psalm 139:8 NIV
This passage is from a Psalm that is attributed to David. In it, he writes about the omnipresence of God. This poetic song describes the incomprehensible power and knowledge that the Lord has. Whether he ascends into heaven or lays in the place of the dead, David writes of God, “you are there.”
1 Thessalonians 4:14 asserts that believers that have died actually sleep in Christ saying, “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. KJV” Here we see that God is still with those who have died.
Everlasting Life
The dead in Christ will rise from the grave as we read in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so, shall we ever be with the Lord. KJV” As Christians, God promises us everlasting life.
Like we were asleep rather than dead, the Lord Jesus takes his faithful into heaven when he returns. Just as David asserts, the Lord is all powerful and omnipresent. Whether we are in heaven or in the grave, God is still with us. Through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, those who live in Christ will rise from the grave and have everlasting life in heaven with the Father.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the promise of eternal life. Thank you, Father, that you are there. It comforts me to know that I will never be separated from you. Give me the things I need for today and lead me into life eternal as I Live in obedience to your will. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
