Wondrous Works

Wondrous Works

Let me understand the teaching of your precepts! Then I will meditate on your wondrous works. Psalm 119:27 WEB

Jewish tradition teaches that King David wrote this psalm to teach his son Solomon the Hebrew alphabet. Beyond that, the psalm teaches spiritual lessons, providing foundational support for living life in obedience to the word of God. In addition, the writing makes clear the importance of prioritizing the word of God in our lives. Also, the writer demonstrates the value of praying to God for understanding in order to focus our minds on the wondrous works of our Creator.

This is the longest psalm in the bible. It is an acrostic poem in which each set of eight verses begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The theme throughout the psalm is a prayer of a faithful believer who delights in the sacred law of God. Putting God in his proper place in our lives, we seek understanding from him while growing in appreciation of his wondrous works.

Trust in the Lord

A precept is a general rule meant to regulate behavior or thought. Seeking God in order to understand his precepts shows wisdom and submission. The bible teaches in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. WEB” Understanding that God’s ways are higher than our own, the psalmist prays that God allow him to understand his intended meaning and the usefulness of his precepts.

As we read in Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. KJV” When we seek understanding from God in prayer, the Holy Spirit is our reliable source of accurate interpretation. Meditating on the wondrous works of God, we grow in appreciation of his power, authority, and providence.

Prayer; ‘Father God, thank you for the truth of your holy word. Help me to understand your precepts. Guide me in prayer with your Holy Spirit. Delight my heart as I meditate on your glory and the majesty of your wondrous works. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
