We Wait in Hope

We Wait in Hope

We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. Psalm 33:20 NIV

Psalm 33 is full of praise and rejoicing in the goodness of God. The Septuagint credits King David with writing it. Otherwise, we have no clear indication of the author. The Psalm is a celebration of the power and righteousness of the Lord. Written for the nation of Israel as a song of praise, Christian gentiles celebrate the song because we have been adopted into the family of God through faith in Jesus Christ.

The words, “we wait in hope of the Lord,” indicate the faith and joy of those who expect to see the goodness of God. As Christians, we have received the Lord as Savior and live daily in forgiveness because of the grace of God. We wait for answers to our prayers, and we wait for God to deliver us from negative circumstances. The Lord Jesus, who lives in the hearts of all believers, gives us hope.

Our Help And Shield

As for the words, “he is our help and our shield,” Christians receive the help of the Holy Spirit. We also have the word of God for comfort and support. Psalm 46:1 encourages the faithful saying, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. WEB” God helps us and shields us from danger. For this, we wait in hope for the Lord.

Faith is likened to a shield in Ephesians 6:16 which says, “above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. WEB” The shield of faith is the most essential element of the full armor of God mentioned in Ephesians. Like the ancient Israelites, we wait in hope for the Lord. He is our Savior and redeemer Jesus Christ. He is our help and our shield.

Prayer: “Father God, I trust in you. Thank you for the hope I have because of Jesus Christ. Give me the patience to wait for your timing and guide me to serve your will for my life. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
