But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 WEB

In John 8:12 we read, “ Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life. WEB” These words of Christ are a reference to prophecy revealed in Isaiah 60:1 that states, “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. KJV”

Jesus Christ is the light of the world. When we walk in the light, we walk in step with his teaching. Jesus taught us to love and forgive. He taught obedience to the will of God. As we walk in the light of Christ we live in accord with his love, loving others as he loved us. We walk in obedience to him. As Jesus says in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments. WEB”

The passage we consider follows 1 John 1:6 which reads, “If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in the darkness, we lie, and don’t tell the truth. WEB” Our love for Christ motivates our fellowship with him. It is the love of Chris that leads us to live in obedience to the world and will of God.

The Will of God

Jesus calls us out of the world and to repentance. He leads us to live in obedience to the will of God. Additionally, he calls us to fellowship with him and our brothers and sisters in Christ. In fellowship, we are truthful and accountable. In other words, we no longer live double lives. 

Our Christian brothers and sisters help us to grow in Christ through good example, correction, and prayer. As we read in James 5:16, “Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective. WEB” Fellowship, honesty, and accountability helps each of us to walk in the light of Christ.
