The elder, to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not I only, but also all those who know the truth, for the truth’s sake, which remains in us, and it will be with us forever: Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. 2 John 1:1-3 WEB
As with his first epistle, John writes this letter as a warning against false teaching. In addition, the letter encourages the reader to walk in truth and love. John explains what that means in 2 John 1:6 writing, “This is love, that we should walk according to his commandments. This is the commandment, even as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it. WEB”
John addressed his second epistle to “The Elder,” the chosen woman and her children. It is not clear who this woman is but the text reveals John’s admiration, love, and respect for her. His letter encourages perseverance in Christ. In a time when false teachers led many astray, John encouraged his readers to hold firm to the truth of the gospel message.
Love One Another
Jesus commands us to love one another. As we read in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. WEB”
When we choose to live in obedience to the word and will of God, we choose to live in truth and love. In truth and love we encourage and support one another. Like John, we show concern for others. We look out for one another. Above all else, we submit to the will of God. As we read in 2 John 2:8-9, “Watch yourselves, that we don’t lose the things which we have accomplished, but that we receive a full reward. Whoever transgresses and doesn’t remain in the teaching of Christ, doesn’t have God. He who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the encouragement of your holy word. Thank you for the truth of your grace. Help me to live in truth and love. Guide me to live according to your will. In Jesus name – Amen”
