For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 WEB
The fifth chapter of First Thessalonians begins with reassurances to the faithful that they are aware and prepared for the second coming of Jesus. Paul encourages believers to stay that way reminding them that they are children of the light. He uses light as a metaphor for the salvation received from faith in Jesus Christ.
In addition, Paul discusses the contrast between those who sleep or are drunk and those who are sober and awake. He uses these words to illustrate the differences among people who live sinful lives and the faithful who live lives of obedience to the teachings of God.
We Belong to the Day
Paul encourages believers to employ elements of the armor of God in 1 Thessalonians 5:8 saying, “But since we belong to the day, let’s be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation. WEB” These tools help us to live as Paul says, “together with him,” Jesus Christ.
This symbolic language urges the reader to keep themselves pure in action, living lives of loving and faithful service to God in Christ together with him. Paul advises the church to be vigilant and focused on the saving grace of God. This is our fitting service as the Lord spared us from his wrath through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
The main message of this passage is to stay faithful in living the transformed life of a sincere Christian. Paul expresses confidence in the success of the church in doing this. For this purpose, he guides them with gentle directives. Paul asks that they be patient with one another and endure the correction they receive from leadership when off course.
Prayer: “Father God, search my heart and show me where I need growth and change. Give me wisdom to be of benefit to you and yours. Help me to live together with him, my Savior. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
