For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21 WEB
Upon being jailed and persecuted for preaching the good news of Jesus Christ, Paul wrote a letter giving thanks to the faithful Philippians. In the letter Paul encourages the church explaining that he suffered for a good cause. His imprisonment caused the good news to spread. In spite of the enemies of the word, all things were working for the good of those who believed.
The apostle knew that whether he lived or died, he was doing the will of God for his life. And so, he wrote these memorable words to the church, “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. WEB” Faithful to God, Paul pressed forward, rejoicing in the Lord. He knew that if he lived, he could serve the Lord here on earth. Also, he knew that if he died, he would be present with the Lord. In other words, he had nothing to worry about because of the assurance of eternal life.
Living for Christ
Life on earth, for the believer, means living for Christ. Considering our eternal reward, as Paul said, “to live is Christ.” Paul knew that if he died, he would be in the presence of the Lord. This assurance comforted him and gave him the strength to give his testimony in the face of strong, even violent opposition. The apostle was not in a hurry to die. His desire to spread the gospel meant that he still had work to do. He intended to continue to give the good news of a resurrected Christ to any who would accept it.
In the letter, Paul encouraged the church with these words from Philippians 1:12-14, “Now I desire to have you know, brothers, that the things which happened to me have turned out rather to the progress of the Good News, so that it became evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my bonds are in Christ, and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word of God without fear. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the boldness of the apostles. Thank you for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Give me strength to spread the truth of your word in the face of worldly opposition. Forgive me of my failings and guide my steps as I practice the words, ‘to live is Christ and to die is gain.’ In Jesus’ name – Amen”
