Three Who Testify

Three Who Testify

For there are three who testify: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and the three agree as one. 1 John 5:7-8 WEB

Scripture is the inspired word of God. As we read in 2 Timothy 3:16, “Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. WEB” These verses from the evangelist John claim evidence of Jesus as the Son of God. John teaches that the Spirit, the water, and the blood are three who testify in agreement to the divinity of Christ.

John teaches in verse nine that the testimony of God is superior to the testimony of men. We read of God’s testimony of Christ as his Son in Matthew 3:16-17 which says, “Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him. Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’ WEB”

The Divinity of Christ

These scriptures give an eyewitness account of the Spirit of God and the voice of God affirming Jesus as his Son. The Spirit of God testified as Jesus arose from the water of his baptism. The water illustrates Jesus’ purpose to cleanse us from sin. From the pierced heart of Christ on the cross, the blood and water poured out the testimony of God’s great love for humanity.

Finally, of the three who testify, the blood of Christ testifies to his immortality. Although he shed his blood and died on the cross, God raised Jesus from the dead demonstrating his purpose as a sacrifice for our sins. Jesus’ resurrection offers proof of God’s approval of Christ and his purpose. Men such as John received the good fortune of witnessing first hand these events, receiving this unique testimony to the divinity of Christ.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for sending your son for my salvation and for the three who testify. Thank you for loving me. Help me to share the gospel with the world. Give me wisdom to present your word effectively. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
