Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 WEB
In the first section of chapter four of his letter to the Philippians, Paul directs the church in how to deal with disagreements. Specifically, he is concerned with an argument between two women who served in the church. He begins to address this issue by first reminding the church to rejoice always in the Lord. Ultimately, he advises his fellow believers to focus on things that are good, to think about these things.
Paul continues to encourage the church to unity, instructing them to be gentle with one another. Further, he urges the church to let go of anxiety, praying and petitioning God with an attitude of thanksgiving. In other words, Paul teaches them to pray with the faithful expectation that God will provide for their needs. In doing so, Paul asserts that the peace of God will guard their hearts and thoughts.
Keep Your Heart With Diligence
When we take our focus off of our petty differences and rivalries and focus on the good things of God, strife falls away and the peace of the Lord fills our lives. Whatever we think of directly affects our actions and emotions. And so we should take care to focus on things that support our Christian lives. As Solomon wrote in Proverbs 4:3, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. KJV”
This is why Paul instructs the church to “think about these things.” When we think of that which is true, honorable, and just, we honor the wisdom of the word of our righteous God. Thinking of what is pure, lovely, and of good report, we establish peace within our souls. Considering things of virtue and that which is worthy of praise, we nurture ourselves and others with goodness and a grateful heart.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the instruction I receive from your holy word. Lead me away from disagreeableness and toward supporting my brothers and sisters of faith. Help me to see the good things of your creation and to live in harmony with your word. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
