Things Not Seen

Things Not Seen

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 WEB

In his letter to his fellow Hebrews, Paul gives this definition of faith. It is best understood in context of the rest of the letter. Following this verse, the writer gives an explanation of how the actions of biblical figures proved both the existence of their faith and the validity of their belief. In this sense, faith is derived from former experience and extends into confidence of future expectations of God’s goodness.

Faith is belief in the existence and goodness of God. The Hebrews experienced God’s providence in past examples such as their deliverance from captivity in Egypt. The miraculous parting of the Red Sea and God’s providence in the wilderness. These examples assure the faithful that the Lord will always care for and guide his people.

Paul teaches the superiority of the New Covenant of faith in the saving sacrifice of Christ to the Old Covenant of sacrificing animals for sin. He encourages his readers to maintain faith in Christ rather than return to their former practices. For this reason, Paul writes in Hebrews 10:39, “But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the saving of the soul. WEB”

Formed at God’s Command

Paul continues in chapter eleven to give examples of those who trust in God, actively living in faith and seeking the things not seen. Though we were not consciously present at Creation, Paul writes in Hebrews 11:2, “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. NIV” In addition, Paul reminds his readers of the faith demonstrated by famous figures such as Abel, Noah, and Abraham.

Each of these figures trusted God in the face of worldly opposition. They followed the commands and will of God entrusting their futures to him. They did not focus on earthly losses but sought instead the things not seen, demonstrating their faith. As Paul says in Hebrews 11:16, “But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed of them, to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. WEB”

Prayer: “Father God, I trust and believe in you. Thank you for the encouraging words that build my faith. Guide me to live in accordance with your word as I seek to enter into your kingdom. Help me to share my faith with others. Guide my steps to demonstrate to others my faith in things not seen.  In Jesus’ name – Amen”
