The Word Became Flesh

The Word Became Flesh

The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 WEB

John begins his gospel account with a powerful assertion that reminds the reader of the opening words of Genesis. We read in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. WEB” Of course, the Word became flesh in Jesus Christ.

The opening verses continue to explain that the Word created all things. As we read in the Genesis account, God spoke the material world into existence. With the initial statements of his gospel, John is sharing the message that Jesus is the physical manifestation of our immaterial Creator.

We arrive at a basic understanding of immaterial things when we consider our thoughts. They have no physical substance, but they do exist. Our thoughts take physical form with our spoken word. With words and deeds, we directly impact the material world.

The Image of God

Paul writes in Colossians 1:15, “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. NIV” Also, scripture teaches in Genesis 1:26-27, “God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. WEB” Writing, “the Word became flesh,” John explains that Christ is both fully human and fully God.

In Jesus, John and others witnessed the sinless perfection of the Son of God as a reflection of the exact image of the glory of the Father. Through Jesus, God proved his love for humanity, offering himself as a sacrifice to pay for our sins. The fully human life of Christ reveals the truth of God’s righteousness, mercy, and grace.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for loving me and thank you for the truth of your word. Give me grace enough to live my life in service to you and your kingdom. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
