When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no wine.” John 2:3 WEB
Jesus’ mother Mary had unique insight into his divinity from the time of her conception. Mary learned of Jesus’ purpose before she ever conceived him by the power of the Holy Spirit. The angel Gabriel said to Mary in Luke 1:30-33, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’ He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom. WEB”
Additionally, Gabriel described to Mary the miraculous nature of her conception. He says to her in Luke 1:35, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. WEB”
The First Miracle of Jesus
Similarly, Joseph learned of Jesus’ God given purpose from an encounter with an angel. To Joseph, the angel of the Lord said in Matthew 1:21 concerning Mary’s pregnancy, “She shall give birth to a son. You shall name him Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins. WEB”
From even before his birth, Jesus’ earthly parents understood the divine nature of Jesus as the promised Messiah, our Savior. And so, when at a wedding the wine ran out, Mary reported to Jesus the circumstance knowing that he could solve the problem if he desired to do so. She made no request. But, prompted by Mary’s report that the wine ran out, Jesus performed the first miracle attributed to him in the New Testament. To save the embarrassment of the hosts of the wedding and to demonstrate his divine authority, Jesus turned water into wine.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the encouragement recorded in your holy word. Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ to save repentant sinners like me. Guide me by the power of your Holy Spirit. Help me to live my life to serve your purpose. In Jesus name – Amen”
