These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. 1 John 5:13 WEB
With these words, John affirms the eternal salvation of those who believe in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. In previous verses, John writes about the reliable testimony of the truth of Jesus Christ. According to John, anyone who believes in Jesus as the Son of God is born of God and therefore saved from sin. Further, John reminds the reader that every person who loves the Lord carries out his commands.
Saved Through Faith
The Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 2:8-9, “for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast. WEB” Faith in Christ guarantees salvation. In other words, a Christian is assured of their eternal life. There are no works that guarantee salvation and there are no sins that separate from God for those who truly believe in Christ.
When we fall short of perfection, some saved souls suffer insecurity and begin to doubt their salvation. Although it is important to obey God and there are certainly consequences for those who sin, John intends to encourage believers that salvation is eternal. In addition, he wants us to know that Jesus is the source of that salvation.
And so, don’t let doubts creep into your faithful service to God. The enemy comes as the bible says to kill, steal, and destroy. Don’t let him destroy your assurance of salvation. The Son of God guarantees salvation for those who repent from sin and follow his example of righteousness. Be bold and brave in your seeking of the Father each day and confident in his willingness to forgive sin. As the bible says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the truth of your holy word. Thank you for forgiving my sin. Give me wisdom and sufficient grace to do your will and never doubt my salvation. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
