Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Luke 8:11 WEB
Chapter eight of Luke’s gospel includes Jesus’ Parable of the Sower. Luke begins the chapter describing the Lord’s traveling and spreading the good news of God’s kingdom. Further, Luke reveals the devotion of several women healed and released from oppression by Christ. He then recounts a parable of Christ. In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus creates a metaphor comparing the word of God to seed sown in a field. Verse eleven begins Jesus’ explanation of the parable to his disciples.
The Lord said in Luke 8:5, “The farmer went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell along the road, and it was trampled under foot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. WEB” Jesus explained this statement in Luke 8:12 as he said, “Those along the road are those who hear, then the devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. WEB”
Continuing the parable of the seed and the sower, Luke 8:6 further quotes Christ saying, “Other seed fell on the rock, and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because it had no moisture. WEB” Luke 8:13 records the meaning of these words as Jesus said, “Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root, who believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation. WEB”
Perseverance and Fruit
Luke 8:7 gives yet another classification of ground conditions as Jesus said of the seed, “Other fell amid the thorns, and the thorns grew with it, and choked it. WEB The Lord explains this portion of the parable in Luke 8:14 which reads, “That which fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. WEB”
Finally, Christ finished the parable in Luke 8:8 saying, “Other fell into the good ground, and grew, and produced one hundred times as much fruit.” As he said these things, he called out, ‘He who has ears to hear, let him hear!’ WEB” Jesus clarified this statement about the seed in Luke 8:15 as he said, “Those in the good ground, these are those who with an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it tightly, and produce fruit with perseverance. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the valuable lessons in your holy word. Thank you for the truth of Jesus Christ. Help me to hold on to your word tightly. Guide me to do your will with my life. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
