For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
In his second letter to Timothy, Paul is counseling his young friend concerning the spiritual weakness of fear. It could have been that Timothy was content to be a follower but with Paul away, Timothy had a leadership role in Ephesus. He needed to be bold as an authority in the church. He needed to express power and love and a sound mind.
One of Satan’s greatest tricks is to convince a believer to live in fear. The enemy will attempt to get us to worry about finances, relationships, and even question our own salvation. When this happens, remember these words from Psalm 34:4, “I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. KJV” Fear paralyzes but faith mobilizes us, making us able to serve the Lord and take action that pleases God.
Developing in Christian Life
As we develop as Christians and grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ, we are given more responsibility. This tends to pull us out of our comfort zone. A person might feel unequipped or ill prepared to serve in a greater capacity. When this happens, we can be assured that God will not give us more than we can handle. Remember this verse from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. WEB”
Power is important in understanding God and his word. There is power in the name of Jesus. In Christ we have the power and authority to intercede with prayer, cast out evil influences and heal the sick. Like a mother attending to her young or sick child, we nurture and nurse one another to grow and restore health. There is life sustaining resurrection power in believing the word of God.
There is tremendous power in love. We are commanded to love one another by Christ as he said in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another. WEB” In the body of Christ, we support, love, and encourage one another. You are not alone. You have brothers and sisters and a God that loves you.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your Holy Spirit. Direct my steps as I grow in faith and understanding. Praise your holy name! I am overjoyed to receive a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Help me to serve your purpose with humility and grace. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
