The House of David

The House of David

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. Luke 1:26-27 KJV

Jesus Christ was the first man born of the Holy Spirit. Since the ministry of Jesus, millions upon millions of men and women have been born again by the power of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ. But even before the time of Christ under the First Covenant recorded in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit of God came upon David as Nathan anointed him as the next King of Israel.

Our timeless, eternal, heavenly Father powerfully demonstrated the salvation to come through Christ through the repentant, faithful, God seeking life of the Holy Spirit inspired King David.

The house of David can simply mean any of those who descend by birth from the great king David himself. But also, the house of David is the palace that is the royal residence of the king of God’s chosen people. The Lord promised to establish David’s throne forever through the prophet Samuel.

Jesus Christ fulfills this prophecy as he descends from the house of David through Mary and Joseph by the power of the Holy Spirit. In addition, God gave Jesus all authority over heaven and earth after his resurrection. This is recorded in Matthew 28:18.

Jesus Holds the Key

Prophesying of the Messiah to come, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the prophet Isaiah wrote in Isaiah 22:22, “And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. KJV” And so, Jesus holds the key to the house of David.

We learn in the parable of the ten virgins found in Matthew 25:1-13, it is the Lord who determines who he allows in and who he bars from entering the kingdom. As Jesus says in Matthew 7:21, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. WEB”

The Son of the Most High

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy with John the Baptist, the angel Gabriel came to Mary. Joseph, her intended husband, was from the house of David. Many believe that Mary too was from the line of David through David’s son Nathan. Gabriel announced to Mary the miraculous circumstance of her conceiving a child through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Gabriel told Mary in Luke 1:31-33, “Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’ He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom. WEB”

Made Sure Forever

The birth, life, death, and resurrection of Christ fulfilled God’s plan for the salvation of mankind. Further, Jesus fulfilled God’s promise to establish David’s throne forever. This promise is recorded in 2 Samuel 7:16 which says, “Your house and your kingdom will be made sure forever before you. Your throne will be established forever. WEB”

God is faithful. Our heavenly Father always keeps his promises. We read in Deuteronomy 7:9, “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. KJV”

Through a humble virgin girl named Mary, God gave his own Son into the house of David to call sinners to repentance. Jesus, the King of Kings, died for our sins and rose from the grave defeating sin and death. God established our Savior’s authority over all things on earth and in heaven. Christ overcame the world and reigns supreme throughout eternity. As David wrote in Psalm 119:89, “Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. NIV”

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Give me wisdom to serve your will. Guide me through the power of your Holy Spirit to honor you with my life. In Jesus name – Amen”
