And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. Genesis 1:3-5 WEB
Genesis gives the account of how our Creator works. God speaks things into existence. He spoke, and in his mighty authority, creation happened as he intended. With his sublime words, “Let there be light,” the material universe began to form.
The New Testament tells us that Jesus was present and the actual agency of God’s creation. We read in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. WEB” He continues in John 1:14 saying, “The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. WEB” Of course the Word John refers to is Jesus Christ.
On the first day, God divided light from darkness. Ultimately, the Lord separates those redeemed by his Word from the unrepentant who continue in their sin. As God separated light from darkness on the first day, at the end of this age, Jesus separates the redeemed from those who continue in their sin. Christ said of the unrepentant in Matthew 25:46, “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. WEB”
The Light of the World
In biblical terms, light symbolizes the goodness of God. For this reason, Jesus taught his followers in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. WEB”
Do you need God to speak a new day into your life? Go to the Lord in prayer. As we read in Philippians 4:6, “In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. WEB” The God who created the universe is faithful to hear repentant sinners.
Prayer: “Father God, I know that on the first day you spoke all things into existence. Speak a new day into my life. Renew my mind, restore my spirit, and lead me into your will with your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
