In his distress he sought the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his ancestors. 2 Chronicles 33:12 NIV
This passage refers to Manasseh, a subservient king of Judah once thrown into an Assyrian prison. He had lived a life that was sinful and displeasing to God. Manasseh was tyrannical and an idolater. While in prison, the king reflected on his life and saw how wretched he had been. Realizing his situation and his own deep, dark failings, Manasseh, in great distress, repented and humbled himself to the God of his ancestors, seeking the favor of the Lord.
The Lord’s Mercy
Although he had sinned terribly, he knew that the Lord is merciful and forgives those who sincerely repent and commit to live within the will of God. Although he had lived for years in rebellion to the Lord, Manasseh, who had led thousands of his fellow men and women into sin, was forgiven and even restored to the throne.
The bible tells us that Manasseh led the nation astray. The word tells us that Israel became more sinful than the nations God destroyed on Israel’s behalf. Despite all his sin and rebellion, God restored the king. The king repented and found the favor of the Lord. God does the same for those living in rebellion today. We have never sunken so low that the Lord will forget his promise for mercy concerning the truly repentant. As we read in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. NIV” Seek the favor of the Lord.
You may think that the accumulated sins you have committed are unforgivable. The story of Manasseh encourages sinners to understand the mercy and faithfulness of God. When we humble ourselves and truly change our ways, God is faithful to forgive us.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your mercy. I humble myself before you. Forgive me for my sins as I forgive those who have offended me. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
