The Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? Luke 12:42 NIV
Jesus is talking with his disciples about using wisdom and faithfully taking care of those who accept the Gospel as the true word of God. Christ refers to himself as the master. As believers, we are joint heirs in the kingdom of heaven. Nonetheless, there are positions of power and authority in the organizational structure of the church.
The parable of the faithful and wise manager is a promise of reward for those that are found faithful when the master returns. It is also a warning to those who disobey the will of God by doing what they want rather than following the master’s plan.
God Is the Ultimate Authority
What does it mean to be faithful and wise? The faithful know God and conform their actions to his will. We learn the beginning of wisdom in Proverbs 9:10 as it reads, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding. KJV” Acknowledging that God is the ultimate authority, this passage helps us understand that to be wise in God’s sight is to submit to his will.
Whether we are leading a church, leading a family or giving our testimony to a friend, ultimately, Jesus teaches us to be faithful in discharging our duties and to seek wisdom from God so that we may accomplish his will. We do not know the hour, or the day Christ will return. When he does, we want to be caught living Godly lives.
Prayer: “Father God, I want to do your will. Help me to better understand how to serve you. Thank you for being faithful. Lead me in my faithful relationship with you. Grant me wisdom and understanding. I am committed to you and your word. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
