The Day of Pentecost

The Day of Pentecost

Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. Acts 2:1 WEB

The word “Pentecost” derives from the Greek word for “fiftieth.” It is seven weeks and a day after the Sabbath associated with the Feast of Unleavened Bread. On the Day of Pentecost, The Holy Spirit promised by Christ filled each of his disciples.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he promised  in John 14:16, “I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever. WEB” Jesus does not leave his faithful without support. Believers have direct access to God through Christ and consonant guidance from his Holy Spirit.

The scripture mentions the disciples gathered together in one place and of one accord. Gathered together for the purpose of worshiping God in celebration of the resurrected Christ, God poured out his Spirit on the assembled disciples and they began to speak in languages they did not know.

God Pours Out His Spirit

This amazes some who hear Galieans speak foreign languages with their distinct local accents. It causes others to wonder if the worshipers are drunk. The Apostle Peter explains to puzzled onlookers that the event fulfills prophecy. He says in Acts 2:16-17, ‘But this is what has been spoken through the prophet Joel: It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. WEB”

When we gather in one place with one accord in the name of Jesus, on the Day of Pentecost, or on any other day, the love of Christ is there in the middle of it all. As the Lord promises in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. KJV”

Prayer: “Father God, thank you my brothers and sisters of faith. Thank you for your presence in my life. Help me to live in accord with your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
