These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 KJV
This is one of the most treasured statements in John’s gospel. With these words, Christ combines his teaching with a warning and encouragement. Following the Lord does not always lead to an easy life. But even in times of trouble, we have peace knowing that God is in control.
Prior to making this statement, Jesus tells his disciples that he is going back to his Father. He is preparing them for his arrest and crucifixion. Christ knows that a period of grief awaits them, but the Lord comforts his followers saying in John 16:20, “Most certainly I tell you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy. WEB”
Although Jesus’ crucifixion was fast approaching, he knew that he would rise from the grave. In John 2:9 the Lord spoke a prophecy of his own death and resurrection. Referring to his body as a temple Christ says, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. WEB” And so, he prepared his followers for the cruelty of his death. But also, he prepared them for his triumphant return. This is why he says, “I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. WEB”
I Have Overcome The World
But more than that, Jesus says to his disciples, “be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. KJV” In obedience to God’s plan for our salvation, Jesus defeated sin and death. He lived a sinless life and went to the cross in our place reconciling sinners to a righteous God. As we read in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. WEB”
The peace that Jesus gives us is not the same as the peace that comes through the world. Jesus gives us spiritual peace. We do not have to fight for it. We do not have to negotiate for it. The peace of Christ is a gift for believing in him and the sacrifice he made on the cross to relieve us from our sins. Jesus gives the peace of the promise of eternal life in the kingdom of heaven.
Prayer: “Father God, you are holy and righteous. Thank you for the gift of peace that comes from belief in Jesus Christ. Guide me to do your will today and lead me into a better tomorrow. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
