So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; James 1:19 WEB
James begins his epistle with a brief introduction. He addresses his letter to the twelve tribes of Israel scattered abroad among the nations. As such, he directs his words to kindred souls who already have a broad knowledge of Jewish religious traditions and scripture. Beyond that, James identifies himself as a servant of God and Jesus Christ, the Savior of mankind.
As an actual brother of Jesus, James gives an interesting perspective. Closely observing the ministry and miracles of Christ as well as experiencing the risen Lord, James is a first-hand witness to the divine nature of Jesus. Consequently, James accepted Jesus as the promised Messiah. Further, his teaching is consistent with both the Old Testament and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Righteousness of God
After describing the proper attitude with which to overcome trials and temptations, James transitions to the theme of listening and doing. In doing so, he teaches the value of listening to the instruction of God’s holy word. Rather than reactively responding to events, James recommends that Christians be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. He gives his reasoning in James 1:20 writing, “for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. WEB”
Understanding that God is in control, there is no need to manipulate others with our words. There is no need to move others with our anger through intimidation. Rather, as we are slow to anger, followers of Christ imitate the wisdom and patience of God. But more than that, when we are quick to listen to the word of God, we have the opportunity to implement God’s word in our lives. As we read in James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the valuable instruction of your holy word. Thank you for the clarity it brings to my life. Open my ears fully to the truth. Guide me to do your will with my life. In Jesus name – Amen”
