He gave some to be apostles; some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, shepherds and teachers; Ephesians 4:11 WEB
Our service demonstrates our devotion to the kingdom of heaven. As Chrstians, God calls each of us to a life of service to his kingdom and to our fellow man. We all serve in some capacity. But God calls some people to serve in one of these demanding spiritual leadership roles.
Notice that genuine leadership for the church is given by God. In his letter to the Ephesian church, Paul teaches that Jesus gave some individuals to serve in spiritual leadership roles. Paul shares that Christ’s purpose for apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers is to equip God’s people for works of service.
The Gospel
These leadership roles exist to inform, protect, correct and guide new believers. They serve to present a full understanding of the truth of God’s word and facilitate the development of a mature, accurate understanding of the gospel message of Jesus Christ.
Apostles traveled to teach the gospel and generally started new congregations where they went. A prophet’s primary role is to make known the word of God. Evangelists are those who share the Good News of Jesus Christ. As followers of Christ, we are all called to this role.
In the Geek text, shepherds and teachers seem to be treated as the same office or status. Also, some versions interpret this text as “pastors and teachers.” In either case, the role implies guidance, instruction, and protection during developmental years. Born again in Christ, we become a child of God. In time, with love and the grace of God, we mature. But at first we’re spiritual infants in need of instruction in the word of God and the love of our brothers and sisters in faith.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your shepherds and teachers. Thank you for the love and support of your faithful. Guide me to use the gifts you give me in your service. Lead me to live a life that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
