not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer; Romans 12:11-12 WEB
Before making this statement about serving the Lord, Paul encouraged followers to outdo one another in showing honor to fellow believers. These words promote enthusiastic support of one another in the church. Paul directs us to treat each member of the body of Christ with dignity and respect.
In addition, the apostle tells the church to be fervent in spirit. This indicates maintaining a fiery passion for the Lord and his people. Jesus himself warns against becoming complacent in our service to the will of God. Christ counsels against this in Revelation 3:16 saying, “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth. WEB” In other words, it sickens the Lord when we lose our passion for his purpose.
Serving the Lord Our God
The words, “serving the Lord,” indicate the object of our energy and enthusiasm. Spiritually and emotionally, Paul instructs us to be completely devoted in service to the Lord and his people. This enthusiasm stems from the hope we have in salvation and redemption. We rejoice in hope because of the promise of our union with Christ in heaven.
Finally, Paul mentions enduring trouble and continuous steadfast prayer. This acknowledges that we all have difficult days ahead of us. When trials and tribulations come, we connect with God in prayer. God will never leave us or forsake us. When we go to him in prayer, the Lord sustains us through the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the truth of your holy word. Fan the flames of my passion for you and keep me enthusiastic in my service to your good work. Shelter me through the difficult times and lead me to the place Christ has created for me in heaven. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
