One Flesh

One Flesh

Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh. Genesis 2:24 WEB

Chapter two in the Book of Genesis describes the creation of the first man and woman. First, the Lord made Adam. Genesis 2:7 reads, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. KJV” Then, the Lord made a garden in the east of Eden.

After placing Adam in the Garden of Eden, the Lord then created a suitable mate for the first man. Genesis 2:21-22 describes the creation of the mother of all mankind saying, “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. KJV”

Flesh of My Flesh

Upon receiving Eve from the Lord Adam proclaimed in Genesis 2:23, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. KJV ” It is at this point that scripture makes clear the importance of marriage between a man and a woman. As the first man and women come from one flesh, upon reaching maturity, God intends that a man leave his mother and father and join as one flesh with his wife.

The practice of a mother and father raising their children in a faithful, monogamous relationship was God’s plan for human families from the very beginning. As Jesus said of married couples in Matthew 19:6, “they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. NIV” In marriage, a man and a woman create a new family. The sexual union of a man and a woman brings with it the happy circumstance of childbirth and the joint parental responsibility to raise their offspring in a stable, loyal, and loving environment.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the wisdom of  our holy scripture. Thank you for the righteous plan you created for human families. Guide me away from error and temptation. Lead me to live my life in obedience to your word and will. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
