By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:35 WEB
Before his arrest and crucifixion, Jesus prepared his disciples for his death. Christ taught them the importance of genuine love for one another. The Lord said in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. WEB”
Following Jesus’ instruction, Peter asserts his willingness to die for the Lord. He said in John 13:37, “I will lay down my life for you. WEB” Jesus responded in John 13:38, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times. WEB” Each gospel account records the fulfillment of Jesus’ prophetic words.
God Is Love
To love like Jesus, requires trusting God completely. Jesus’ willingness to go to the cross for our sins highlights his understanding of God’s goodness and grace. He knew our Father would raise him from the tomb. Jesus prophesied in John 2:19, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. WEB” Christ knew of both his impending death and resurrection.
In obedience to the will of God for the salvation of mankind, Jesus demonstrated God’s love for sinful humanity. He went to the cross and paid the penalty for our sins. The agent of our salvation, Christ teaches us to show love for one another because God is love. As the evangelist wrote in 1 John 4:7-8, “Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God, and knows God. He who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, for God is love. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the example of love we receive in Jesus Christ. Thank you for my brothers and sisters in Christ. Guide me to do your will with my life. Help me to love like you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
