He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. 1 John 2:10 WEB
In this scripture, John expands upon his discussion of a new commandment given by Jesus. In John 13:34, Jesus says “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another. WEB”
John warns the readers in earlier verses that anyone who says he is in the light and hates his brother is actually in darkness. Love for one another demonstrates our close relationship with Jesus. In addition, love for our brothers and sisters is an act of obedience to Christ.
Jesus says in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments. WEB” Loving our brothers and sisters of faith not only shows obedience to the will of God, but it also demonstrates love for our Lord and Savior.
Living in the light of the word of God, Jesus Christ, we avoid the pitfalls of spiritual failings. When we live in the light of the truth and love one another, as John says, “there is no occasion for stumbling.”
Love Your Neighbor
A lawyer asked Christ in Matthew 22:36, “Which is the greatest commandment in the law? Matthew 22:37-39 records his reply, “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ WEB”
These words indicate the significance of love in fulfilling the will of our heavenly father. Love is the core component of living a Godly life. It is central to pleasing God and following the example of Jesus. After all, as we read in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. KJV”
The apostle Paul describes love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 writing, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. WEB” He continues, “Love never fails. WEB”
Living in the light of Jesus Christ means living lives of love for God and our fellow man. Jesus commands that we love one another because he loves us and wants what’s best for our lives and eternal souls.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the truth of your holy word. Help me to love as you love. Guide me by the light of Christ. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
