God created man in his own image. In God’s image he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 WEB
This verse records the creation of mankind in God’s image. In the previous verse, God gave his reasoning for the creation of man. We read in Genesis 1:26 “God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ WEB”
As we take note of God’s commanding appeal, “let us make man,” we know from scripture of Christ’s presence at the time of creation. John 1:1-3 references Jesus’ active role in creation saying, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. WEB”
In addition, scripture records the presence of the Holy Spirit in creation. Genesis 1:2 teaches, “The earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep and God’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters. WEB” When God said, “let us make man in our image,” he spoke to Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Dominion Over the Earth
Made in God’s image, we possess speech, moral reasoning, spiritual awareness, abilities far beyond those of other animals. And so, made in God’s image, mankind serves an elevated purpose. God gave mankind dominion over all the earth. After creating mankind, God said in Genesis 1:28, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.
In awe of God’s handiwork, David wrote in Psalm 8:4-6, “what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him? For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor. You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet. WEB”
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the truth of your holy word. Thank you for including me in your plans. Guide me with the instruction of your Holy Spirit. Help me to live a life that pleases you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
