Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name. Psalm 91:14 WEB
There is some confusion about who wrote Psalm 91. Some scholars credit the verses to King David. Others say that Moses wrote the Psalm during their forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Jewish tradition ascribes the work to Moses and asserts that David added it to his Book of Psalms. Regardless of the author, the promise of God, “I will deliver him,” continues to inspire and comfort readers today.
In verse fourteen of Psalm 91, the Lord promises, “I will deliver him,” because of the love of the believer. In other words, God promises to protect those who love him. But what does it mean to love God? Christ gives us the answer in John 14:15 saying, “If you love me, keep my commandments. WEB” Obedience to the commands of God is how we demonstrate our love for him.
Salvation
There are hints in this Psalm to the coming of Christ. Psalm 91: 15-16 reads, “He will call on me, and I will answer him and be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him. I will satisfy him with long life and show him my salvation. WEB” This relates to the saving grace Christians receive from the cross of Jesus.
Psalm 91 is also mentioned in the temptation of Christ. Satan attempted to persuade Jesus to jump from the temple in Jerusalem by using the words of Psalm 91:11-12 that say, “For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, so that you won’t dash your foot against a stone. WEB” Christ answered in Matthew 4:7, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ WEB”
For those who know him and love him, God says, “I will deliver him.” To know God and to love God is to live according to his holy word. Jesus Christ is the Word of God as we read in John 1:14, “The Word became flesh, and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. WEB” Those who love God, seek him, and serve him. For Christians, this is just as important as it was for Moses or David.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the gift of salvation. Search my heart and convict me of my failings. Help me to overcome my sinful nature in service to you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
