I Raised You Up

I Raised You Up

For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Romans 9:17 NIV

This is a quote that refers back to Exodus 9:16. God is dealing with Moses who is trying to get Pharaoh to let his people leave the land of Egypt. The Lord wanted Moses to inform Pharaoh that God himself elevated him to his position of authority in his land. Saying, “I raised you up,” God asserted his authority over the most powerful ruler of the most powerful nation of the time.

God Demonstrates His Power

Beyond demonstrating his authority, God had an agenda. He wanted his people to proclaim his name throughout the entire world. Simply put, the Lord raised Pharaoh up and brought him down to demonstrate his power. God was making it clear that he exists, that he can intervene for his people, and that he is the supreme authority.

The Lord was displaying grace and justice to his chosen people. The entire story of Exodus demonstrates the greatness of God. It shows that the Lord loves his people. Without divine support, the Israelites would not have been able to escape Egypt. God sent warnings and plagues and parted the sea so that there would be no doubt of his mighty power. In addition, the Lord ensured that the story would be told throughout the world for all of time.

God has the power to raise up and to tear down. Because of this, we must take care to align our behavior and beliefs to his will.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for grace. Thank you for adopting me into your family. Instruct me in your word and lead me to do your will. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
