I Bow My Knees

For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Ephesians 3:14 WEB

In prayer, we bow our heads in submission to God. Just the same, bowing our knees demonstrates worship and deep reverence for the Lord. As David wrote in Psalm 96:4, “O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.  KJV”

Ephesians 3:14, written by Paul, transitions from revealing the mystery of God’s work to a prayer for the faithful readers of his letter. By saying, “For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Paul shows his humility. Likewise, when we approach the Lord in prayer, we do so with a humble nature and respect for the supreme authority of our Creator.

Jesus Christ Is Lord

Paul writes in Philippians 2:10-11, “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. WEB” 

Similarly he reminds in Romans 14:11, “’As I live,’ says the Lord, ‘to me every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess to God.’ WEB” The latter of these two statements is a reference to Isaiah 45:23.

While with them in person, Paul prayed with the elders in Ephesus. We read about this in Acts 20:36 which states, “When he had spoken these things, he knelt down and prayed with them all. WEB” After, the members wept, knowing they would never see him again. In his letter, although he was in prison when he wrote it, he continued to pray for the church.

Prayer: “Father God, I bow my knees to you. You are my saving grace. Without you I am lost but with you I have hope. Give me strength through the Holy Spirit. Keep me rooted and grounded in love. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
