Heir of All Things

Heir of All Things

God, having in the past spoken to the fathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, has at the end of these days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds. Hebrews 1:1-2 WEB

These verses from Hebrews emphasize the unfolding of God’s message to humanity culminating in Christ as the Son of God and heir of all things. The text describes Jesus as the heir of all things of God while making clear that Christ was the agent of creation present with God from the very beginning of time.

In Old Testament times, God spoke through his prophets to the people of Israel. Now, God speaks through the Good News of the Gospel in Jesus Christ. The message is the same but the revelation of God’s plan for redemption is complete in Christ. Jesus is the Messiah that the prophets spoke and wrote about in their time.

Not only does God speak through prophets and through his Son, Jesus Christ, the Lord also speaks through his creation. Throughout all of history, God spoke through his work. As David asserts in Psalms 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God. The expanse shows his handiwork. WEB”

The Word Was God

The passage from Hebrews 1:2 affirms that God created the worlds through Jesus Christ. John 1:1-3 makes the same assertion saying, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. Web” John continues to explain that the Word became flesh and lived as a man. Of course, this refers to the person of Jesus Christ.

Ideas presented in these scriptures are profound. They assert not only that Jesus is the Son of God, but also that Jesus is himself God. With God since the beginning, Jesus predates creation. Beyond that, as the Son of God, Jesus is “heir of all things.” Moreover, adopted into the family of God through faith in Christ, Romans 8:17 tells us that we are “joint heirs with Christ. WEB” We share in his inheritance and will live eternally in heaven with our Creator.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for revealing yourself through your creation. Thank you for the words of the prophets as well as the words and deeds of Jesus Christ. Help me to put the lessons I learn from your word to work in my life. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
