All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. “He trusts in the Lord,” they say, “let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” Psalm 22:7-8 NIV
It is impossible to read these words without feeling the anguish of the writer. Attributed to King David, the first verse of the twenty-second Psalm was quoted by Jesus while on the cross as he said, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? WEB”
The association between this scripture and the suffering of Jesus is often made by readers of this text. It helps us understand how fully Christ took on the suffering of humanity in his sacrifice to save us from sin. Beyond that, it is an indication that the psalmist was speaking prophetically in his suffering.
Let God Judge
How often do we as Christians hear insults and the mocking of our faith? 1 Peter 2:23 says of Jesus, “When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously. WEB” God calls us to do the same.
In life there will be bullies. There will be mockers but take courage. As Jesus said in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. KJV” When insulted, follow the example of Jesus. He trusts in the Lord. In order to have peace, we should do the same.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your love and for the example of Jesus Christ. Lead me in your way. Establish peace deep within my heart. Give me the strength to endure insults without returning them. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
