He Hears Us

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us 1 John 5:14 KJV

Chapter five is the last chapter of the First Book of John. In it, the author displays the quality of love as characteristic of those who live in Christ. John shares the message that sinners are saved by faith in Jesus Christ. It is expressed that once we receive Christ, we are to live Godly lives of faith receiving the Holy Spirit and living according to God’s will and not the flesh. Confidence in our salvation comes from living lives of love by the example of Christ.

To Love God Is to Keep His Commands

John explains that loving God means keeping his commands. As Jesus overcame the world, John expresses that those who believe in Christ and follow his commands have also overcome the world. This is an indication that those who live in Christ will live lives that are pleasing to God, forgoing sin. As he hears us, we listen to the word of God and obey him.

After expressing his confidence in eternal life, John writes about his confidence in prayer. Not only do we know that Christ saved us from sin for eternity, but we can be confident that God hears us always. He hears us when we pray. It is important to notice the words, “according to his will.” It is given that Christians will only ask for things that are consistent with living a Godly life.

In other words, God will not give us just anything we ask. Rather he gives us what is within his will. For example, it is the Lord’s will to give believers the Holy Spirit and it pleases God to do this. He hears us. God hears our prayers and answers them according to his purpose. We are assured of our salvation. We are assured that God hears our prayers. Certainly, God answers prayers in a way that aligns with his righteousness and purpose.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for your holy word. Guide me to do your will in my life. Give me the things I will need to live a life that is pleasing to you. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
