Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV
Jeremiah wrote Lamentations in a time of great grief for the people of Israel. The book describes God’s judgment on the nation for falling into sin. But here in the middle of his expressing the pain of a people defeated by their Babylonian rivals, Jeremiah pens these words of hope and faith.
However bleak and desperate our situation is, the scripture tells us that God’s compassion never fails. The prophet reminds us today of God’s faithfulness just as he did his countrymen back then.
A life of true faith is not found in the ever changing circumstances of this world. It is found in the unfailing love and righteousness of God. Whether our difficulties result from our own misdeeds, misfortune, or the assaults of an enemy, God’s compassion is always present. As Jeremiah says of God, “great is your faithfulness.”
God Does Not Change
We change, our circumstances change, but God does not change. For Christians, we have the reliability of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As we read in Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. WEB” We can always rely on the Lord’s unwavering love and stability.
If our trouble is the result of our own actions, the consequences are real and deserved. However, our God is rich in forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 teaches, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. WEB” When we repent for our sins and turn to live in obedience to God, the Lord forgives us and restores us to righteousness.
God gives hope even in desperate times. Whether our trouble results from our own mistakes or injustice thrust upon us from others, God is the ultimate answer. The Lord is our redeemer and he is our protector. Our hope is always restored because of God’s great love.
Prayer: “Father God, great is your faithfulness. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for forgiving me when I repent. Increase the strength of my faith as I study your holy word. Give me wisdom to understand the source of my trouble and a grateful heart for my salvation. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
