Good Measure

Good Measure

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you. Luke 6:38 WEB

In this section of the sixth chapter of Luke, Jesus continues to teach the godly concept of loving our enemies. As adopted children of the most high God, our lives should reflect the forgiveness and mercy of our heavenly Father. Jesus commands in Luke 6:27-8, “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. WEB”

Teaching his followers the generosity of God, Jesus says to his followers in Luke 6:30, “Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again. WEB” With these words, Jesus encourages the faithful to demonstrate the mercy, love, and kindness we receive from God.

Love Your Enemies

The Lord continues to teach us godliness in Luke 6:35 saying, “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. WEB”

Whether we give our material possessions or simply grant forgiveness for offenses committed against us, we show the characteristics of our Father in heaven. In addition, when we forgive debts and debtors, we demonstrate faith in God’s willingness and ability to provide for our needs in “good measure.”

Giving and Receiving Forgiveness

Just as God provides for our needs and forgives us of our sins, Jesus instructs us to give and forgive. We cannot outgive God. Jesus promises a return on our faithful giving and forgiveness, receiving “good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over” for our obedience to his word and will.

Forgiveness is a command of Christ and  a condition of our forgiveness. The Lord teaches in Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. WEB”

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for blessing me. Thank you for providing for my needs with good measure. Forgive me as I forgive those who offend me. Help me to live in obedience to your will. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
