On the first day of the week, when the disciples were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and continued his speech until midnight. Acts 20:7 WEB
Chapter twenty of the Book of Acts describes the faithful service of Paul the apostle. This passage from that chapter mentions the disciples gathered together to break bread with one another. This practice demonstrates the faithfulness of the group in keeping with the commands of Christ as they endeavor to spread the gospel far and wide.
Jesus gives a promise in Mathhew 18:20 saying, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them. WEB” At the last supper before the crucifixion of Jesus, our Lord and his disciples gathered together to break bread. Luke 22:29 records the words of Christ at that time saying, “He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave to them, saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.’ WEB”
Persevering Under Persecution
In line with the teaching of Jesus, the followers of our Savior gathered together with Paul in fellowship to share and celebrate the Good News. As they gather, Paul is feeling the pressure of persecution as he plans to leave the port city of Troas to go to Jerusalem. Jewish leaders were plotting against him. Similar to the Lord he serves, Paul knows he is in danger of dying and yet he perseveres in teaching the Good News of the risen Christ.
The great apostle later reports to his listeners that the Holy Spirit testifies to him of bonds and afflictions that await him. He knows this is the last time he will see these friends and fellow believers. For this reason, Paul speaks through the evening until midnight to the faithful gathered with him.
Paul Proclaims Life
At that time, a boy sitting in a third story window dozed off to sleep and fell to his apparent death. But, in the presence of the faithful servants of God, Paul rushed to aid the youth. Miraculously, after Paul fell upon the youth, he embraced the boy and proclaimed him alive.
With the good news, the crowd found comfort in what could have been a tragedy. Paul continued to speak with those congregated until the morning. He then prayed for those still present and departed for Jerusalem accompanied by tearful friends who accepted that they would never see Paul again in this world.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for those who faithfully spread the Good News of salvation. Thank you for the promise of eternal life with you in the kingdom of heaven. Help me to make the most of every day. Guide my steps that my life will have the impact you intend for your purpose. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
