Exceedingly Abundantly Above

Exceedingly Abundantly Above

Now to him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to him be the glory in the assembly and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 WEB

In verse fourteen of chapter three of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the apostle begins a prayer. His prayer is addressed to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. First, he prays that God grants the Ephesians of faith inner strength through the Spirit. He prays for Christ to dwell in their hearts. His reasoning is to ground the Ephesians in love. He wants them to experience the fullness of God’s love in Christ.

Verses twenty-one and twenty-two conclude Paul’s prayer. In these verses, Paul demonstrates his understanding that God is able and willing to do exceedingly abundantly above anything we ask of him. But what does it mean to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think? Old Testament prophecy gives us an idea in Isaiah 64:4 which reads, “Things which an eye didn’t see, and an ear didn’t hear, which didn’t enter into the heart of man, these God has prepared for those who love him. WEB”

Christ Strengthens Me

God’s ability to do exceedingly and abundantly more than even our wildest dreams comes from his omnipotence. That is to say, God is all powerful. In his strength, nothing is impossible. As we read in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. WEB” In each believer, God’s work is done by the power of the Holy Spirit which is one with God and Christ. We do not need to rely on our own strength because God himself works through us.

Self control is a struggle in the flesh. As we read in Mark 14:38, “Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. WEB” In the Spirit, God subdues the flesh and we are able to overcome temptations and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The power of God works inside of the faithful. Paul concludes his prayer by giving God the glory for all that we ask of him.

Prayer: “Father God, thank you for the encouragement of your holy word. Thank you for the comfort and support of your Holy Spirit. Lead me away from temptation and deliver me from evil. Guide me with your power and counsel of your Holy Spirit to do your will. In Jesus name – Amen”
