Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34 NIV
In the last section of Chapter six in Matthew, Jesus speaks about the ineffectiveness of worry. He comforts us, encouraging those of us who believe in God and serve God to let go of anxiety. Some of his most quoted words follow. With these words, Christ describes the high value God places on the believer.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:25-26, “Therefore I tell you, don’t be anxious for your life: what you will eat, or what you will drink; nor yet for your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing? See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they? WEB”
Christ continues, asking in Matthew 6:27, “Which of you by being anxious, can add one moment to his lifespan? WEB” These words that the Lord spoke help us to understand the futility of worry. It cannot add anything of value to our life.
Consider The Lilies of the Field
Jesus follows with his famous words from Matthew 6:28-29, “Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin, yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these. WEB”
Worry is common, but worry is useless. Jesus wants us to let go of our anxious dispositions. He encourages us not to worry about food, or clothes, or anything else. Instead, he says in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well. WEB”
The chapter concludes with Jesus’ words, “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. WEB” In our daily walk with Jesus, let’s trust God to provide for our needs, let go of worry, and live as Christ says, one day at a time.
Prayer: “Father God, thank you for my salvation in Jesus Christ. I lay my troubles at the foot of his cross and trust you to provide for my needs. Give me wisdom to understand your word as I seek your kingdom and its righteousness. In Jesus’ name – Amen”
